First week reflection

Wow! The first week in the new classroom went by really quickly! I have a few more names to learn and remember. This week we went on two field trip and had a great time! I am looking forward to this weeks field trip- should be lots of fun. As I am learning the ropes of the new classroom- I am amazed by how creative, thoughtful, and energetic the students are.
This weekend has been fun, relaxing, and very short. I have tons of work to get through. So, this blog has to be a short one.
Take care and enjoy!

time flys

So- wow! I guess I haven't written in a while. A lot has happened since the September experience. I changed schools an cooperating teachers. I went from bilingual classroom to a first second blended classroom. I really gained a lot of from this change- I am now closer to home both physically and mentally. After this change I worked in my new classroom for five months. I taught a unit about Mammals, Habitats, and Shelters. I also read the Wizard of OZ to the kids- we had so much fun with this! On my last day in the classroom, we had an Emerald city party. I made each student a pair of green goggles and we watched to movie of Wizard of Oz. The students presented me with a book of Teaching Advice- precious! Tomorrow starts a new quarter and a new classroom. I will be in a third/ fourth/ fifth blended classroom. I am really excited to try working with older students. I think the unit i am going to design and implement will be about geometric art. But that is not set in stone. Well, I will try to write a little more often.

september experience

Well, so far the student teaching is going well. I enjoy the children a lot. I love being able to use spanish to communicate with the students. I feel myself becoming more and more able to speak clearly. My cooperating teacher is a kick! She has a lot of energy and some great ideas. I am amazed be the amount of stuff we are getting done in class and out of class. I love the school I am placed in. The teachers are so welcoming and friendly. I know the program will get hard again in the winter term- but right now it is so fun and I am learning sooooo much. I hope all is well in your worlds and I would love any feed back- if there is anyone reading my blog.

It is hard to be a techno-phobe these days!

Before starting the MAT program I had not used a computer to do much more that typing papers and communicating via e-mail. Now I have a blog. I am creating my own website. And I have (more or less) successfully, put together thre different photoshopped images. I am getting over my fear of the scary, unreliable, computer. Or, so I think- today, when I was typing a paper for Diversity, the power went out. I was litterally done- the spell check was wrapping up- an poof! "Great there goes the paper!" I thought to myself, " I can look forward to sitting here for at least another hour."
Then I decided to buck-up and start all over again. I started up the computer and opened Word. And what do you know?! The computer had kept my paper. In high school I has lost a few papers to similar experiences- So, guess I was leary. Anyway, i finish my paper and saved it. Whew!
While I might be slow at this, I am learning. One power outage at a time.

another fun blog

Once again, I am sitting here struggling to come up with a blog topic. I am at school and feeling like something is missing. And know I know what it is: my best friend, running partner, comic relief and enthusiastic stick fetcher- my dog, Keaty.
About three years ago my boyfriend and I went to the animal shelter to "look at the dogs." We saw many cute mutts, but none of them stood out as "the one." We were about to leave and Matthew saw a cute puppy being taken out to the play area. We both followed her- mesmerized. In the play area, the puppy was splashing in the water bucket, licking my boyfriends hands and being extreamly cute. So, we took her home. We named her Keaty after a character in the noverl, The Beach. Keaty has a lot of energy and loves to go on runs with me. She swims like an otter, and dive completely under water. Since we do not have a television we count on Keat to keep us entertained. Two nights ago Keaty cornered a skunk and she still reeks of its revenge. Matthew had to drive to Safeway at eleven at night to get three big cans of tomato juice. The juice helped to get some of the smell out but I think it is going to take a long time before she doesn't make our eyes water. I know there will be a day when keaty is not around. So I try to enjoy her to the fullest and take care of her the best i can!

Once upon a time...

As I sit here, wondering what to blog about, I am staring at a tree covered in Spanish Moss that is outside the window. Spanish moss is the long, stringy green moss that hangs down from the branches of trees all over the world. Everytime I see spanish moss I am reminded of the story my grandmother told me about its origins...
Once upon a time there was a beautiful Spanish maiden, I'll call her Amalia. This girl was the daughter of a very rich man who thought only of becoming an even richer man. Amalia knew her father had plans to marry her off to one of his old rich friends. However, she was maddly in love with her childhood friend, Gonzalo. Gonzalo was the son of her mother's seimstress. He had little money and knew that Amalia's father would never let them marry. Finally the day came when Amalia's father told her that she must marry his old friend and go to live with him. Amalia and Gonzalo were determinded not to let this happen. The two lovebirds sat and talked for a long time about how they could run away together and hide from the old man. Unfortunately, the old man happened to overhear their conversation an vowed to stop them. Amalia's father was outraged when his friend told him of the young lovers plan. So, he granted his friend permission to take his daughter far away from their village and Gonzalo (for a price, of course). The next day Amalia woke up to find that her belongings were being packed into the old man's coach, she was to leave for a far away land that day! Quickly, she wrote Gonzalo a note, and tucked it away in his mother's sewing basket. She knew her mother's seimstrss would give the note to Gonzalo and he'd come looking for her. In her note she vowed to snip locks of her hair and tie them to the branches of the trees she passed, leaving a trail to where she would be. Did Gonzalo find Amalia? No one knows. However, according to the legend, when you see spainish moss hanging from a tree's branches- you are following the path of the maiden just as Gonzalo did so many years ago.

The end.
